Can you Archive or Delete the Slack #general Channel?
If you manage a Slack workspace, you've probably wondered at some point: can you archive or delete the Slack #general channel? The short answer is no — but there's plenty you can do to manage it effectively. Here's everything you need to know.

Why You Can't Archive or Delete the Slack #general Channel
Every Slack workspace includes a default general channel — typically named #general, though workspace owners and admins can rename it to something like #announcements or #notices. This channel is unique because all members are automatically added to it and cannot leave, making it the backbone of workspace-wide communication.
Because of this, Slack does not allow the #general channel to be archived or deleted. It's a permanent fixture of every workspace, by design.
What You Can Do with the Slack #general Channel
While you can't remove it, there are several ways to manage and customize the #general channel to better suit your team's needs.
Rename the channel
Workspace owners and admins can rename #general to something more fitting for your organization — like #announcements, #notices, or #company-wide. This can help set clearer expectations for how the channel is used.
Restrict who can post
By default, all channel members can post in #general. If you want to keep it focused on official communications, workspace owners and admins can restrict posting permissions, making it read-only for most members.
Use @everyone for urgent announcements
Anyone with posting permission can use @everyone in the #general channel to send a notification to every member of the workspace — ideal for urgent or time-sensitive updates that no one should miss.
Customize your notifications
If #general notifications are becoming overwhelming, you can tailor what you're alerted to:
- Right-click the #general channel name in your sidebar
- Select Edit notifications
- Choose your preferred setting:
- All new posts — get notified every time someone posts
- Just @mentions — only get notified when you're mentioned directly
- Mute — silence the channel entirely (and optionally hide it from your sidebar)
Want to Keep Your Slack Workspace Organized?
While the #general channel is here to stay, other inactive channels don't have to be. If a cluttered channel list is slowing your team down, consider automated archiving with the Chronicle app for Slack. Chronicle automatically identifies and archives inactive channels, keeping your workspace clean without any manual effort.
